Lafourche Parish Council delays vote on tax hike

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - The Lafourche Parish Council has delayed action on a proposal that could increase tax bills for parish property owners.

The Courier reports the parish tax assessor reappraised homes, businesses and other property this summer, resulting in an overall increase in value. The process occurs every four years.

Government boards like the council must then decide whether to keep the resulting windfall or let tax rates roll back to collect the same amount as last year.

The council was scheduled to decide its tax rates, along with those of several appointed boards throughout the parish, Tuesday. But Chairman Joe Fertitta said some boards had not submitted the proper notice required by state law, so the council tentatively scheduled a special meeting to debate the issue Oct. 16.
