The Louisiana chapter of the New Leaders Council (NLC) recently announced the sixteen talented fellows accepted to its 2011 Institute, including Colin Miller of Lafayette. Miller is the only person selected from the Acadiana region, and currently serves as Southern Field Director for the Forum for Equality.
These top emerging leaders are part of a nationwide group of more than 270 young professionals in 15 cities across America.
The Fellows will participate in a rigorous five-month training program focusing on entrepreneurship, public speaking, communications, campaign work, advocacy, building organizations and leadership in order to become progressive "political entrepreneurs."
The 2011 Fellows will attend the NLC Institute held across Louisiana, starting this weekend in Alexandria. An all-volunteer non-profit organization, NLC launched in Louisiana in 2009 and is led by a statewide board of dedicated young progressives. NLC's goals include recruiting emerging leaders from outside of traditional power structures, engaging them on both local and national levels and equipping them to be civic leaders - not only for elective office, but also in their communities and workplaces.
The rigorous application and interview process for the 2011 NLC Louisiana Institute resulted in a class of highly competitive fellows from diverse backgrounds.
"Like our inaugural class, this year's Fellows are impressive young people looking to make a difference in Louisiana," said Matt Bailey, volunteer Co-Director for the statewide chapter. "Our NLC Fellows are the type of people you'll see as strong community leaders, elected officials, and non-profit executives. We're excited to get started this weekend and see them progress over the next five months."
