A Lafayette woman was arrested Tuesday for negligent homicide following an investigation into the death of her 3-year-old daughter.
Lafayette Police said they were called to the 500 block of Acorn Drive July 24 in response to a dead toddler.
The child was taken to an area hospital, where medical personnel told police that the toddler had been "deceased for some time."
Her mother, 27-year-old Sarah Leblanc of Lafayette, told police that the child had been sick for a couple of days.
Investigators were told that the morning of her death, the child reportedly fell asleep at 6 a.m. and was not checked on for 13 hours.
Her mother told police she never left the home, but police later learned through video surveillance that the mother did leave the child unattended to go to a fast food restaurant.
Police say the child went about 25 hours without food or fluids during her illness.
An autopsy report concludes that the child died from hypothermia and dehydration.
Leblanc was booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail on one count of negligent homicide. Her bond is set at $5,000.
