Lafayette Volunteer Gets National Award

Only one high school student in each state is chosen for a nationwide program that recognizes outstanding volunteerism.

This year Louisiana's representative is from Lafayette.

Thursday morning Teurlings Catholic High School surprised one of their own, Corey Zenon, who devotes his free time to helping those most in need.

"I couldnt believe it, I didnt know about this," he said.

Corey volunteers every summer, visiting impoverished villages in Africa to help the poor. He brings money and needed supplies and does work, such as helping to rebuild a school.

The national program, called the "Prudential Spirit of Community Awards," rewards the volunteers with $1000, a medallion and a trip to Washington D.C. for the honoring ceremonies.

Corey already has plans for this summer:

"I'll continue going to Africa, continue helping the people."
