The Lafayette Parish School Board will continue its budget talks tonight. It was set to approve the budget tonight but at its last budget meeting chose to put it off.
This will be their eighth budget meeting in four months. They usually takes them four meetings over two months before finalizing a budget.
But, this year, the budget process began with a multi-million dollar shortfall that has delayed the budget process. The fiscal year began July 1 and the school system has been operating without a proposed budget since then. It is unclear when they will adopt a budget.
The proposed, balanced budget includes:
- Eliminating "excess" teacher positions
- Eliminating 7 assistant principals positions and 2.5 counselors
- Increasing employee health insurance premiums
- $1.2 million in teacher raises funded by increased state funding
