LAFAYETTE, La - Lafayette Renaissance Charter Academy has hired its founding principal, veteran educator LaTonia Harris. Harris has served in a variety of educational roles from teacher to principal in the Miami-Dade County Public School system in Florida. She has experience leading schools with diverse student populations including those in special education, gifted, Head Start and English Language Learners (ELL) programs. Under her leadership student achievement data for reading increased by 29 percentage points while mathematics increased by 50 percentage points.
"Ms. Harris' diverse background and proven leadership skills are the perfect match for our school," said Dr. Mary Louella Riggs Cook, president of the Lafayette Charter Foundation. "Her passion for education and firm belief that every child can learn will serve the students and community well."
Harris earned her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Florida State University. She earned her Master of Education and Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
Lafayette Renaissance Charter Academy is governed by the Lafayette Charter Foundation which is comprised of local and regional community leaders: Dr. Mary Louella Riggs-Cook, Carlos Harvin, Gifford Briggs, Karen Miller, CPA, Virginia Jones, Fernando Perez-Viart and Charles Fenstermaker.
The board selected Charter Schools USA (CSUSA), a nationally recognized leader in education management, to manage the school. CSUSA is the first education management company in the nation to receive accreditation through AdvancEd. This designation assures that all schools opened and operated under CSUSA's model will be accredited in the first year of operation.
In the 2014-2015 school year, CSUSA will manage 58 schools in seven states, serving nearly 60,000 students. In addition to Acadiana Renaissance Charter Academy, this year the company will open another school in Lafayette, one in Iberville, and one in South Baton Rouge.
