This morning, Lafayette police returned to the scene of a deadly crash that claimed the life of 22-year-old Rachael Sonnier on Wednesday, Nov. 21. The department's traffic division used equipment to recreate the scene at the corner of Kaliste Saloom Rd. and Rue Louis XIV where an accused drunk driver ran a red light and collided with Sonnier's vehicle. Fred Dutton, Jr., 23, is charged with OWI and failure to obey a traffic signal.
Sonnier's family questions why his charges have not been upgraded to vehicular homicide. District Attorney Mike Harson tells KATC police must finish their investigation. They may have to take several statements from witnesses, they may be waiting for scientific analysis, they may be waiting for a whole number of things that may take a month or two to complete," he said.
