Lafayette Police memorialize 19 Acadiana officers slain in line of duty

Lafayette Police Department hosted a Police Memorial Day Ceremony Thursday at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on Camellia Boulevard.

A police motorcade paid tribute to the 19 slain officers from Acadiana law enforcement agencies dating back to 1926. The honored officers, represented by their families, were killed in the line of duty.

Officers from area law enforcement agencies, as well as the general public, participated in the memorial procession, which departed from the Lafayette Police Department building and culminated at the church.

"We remember those officers that have given the ultimate sacrifice. It's not only important for us to remember these officers, but it's important to support those families and survivors of those officers who have given the ultimate sacrifice," Cpl. Paul Mouton, LPD spokesperson.

The annual LPD memorial event coincides each year with the commemoration of Memorial Day.
