Lafayette Police Horse Dies

It is with regret that we announce the death of Mounted Unit Horse "Charlie". Charlie had recently undergone surgery at LSU Veterinarian Clinic to address stomach issues. He was back at Cherokee Ranch recovering when he suffered a kink in his small intestines. Charlie was in much pain and discomfort. Based on his condition and the unlikely chance that he would recover, he was put down.

Charlie had been in service to the Lafayette Police Department since April 2006. He was a favorite of the community. Charlie was used in the majority of public appearances and demos. Children especially liked Charlie for the tricks that he could do. Many officers came to appreciate his efforts in police service. He was regularly utilized Downtown and did a phenomenal job in crowd control and disturbances. Many officers both in and outside of the unit will feel this loss. The Lafayette Police Department has lost one of its most valued assets. Charlie was buried at Cherokee Ranch Sunday.
