Lafayette Parish Schools Ready To Go Despite School Board Issues

The final weekend of the summer is over and it's time to send another parish back to school. Lafayette Parish has one of the highest student enrollments in the state and gets started on Tuesday. It's been a summer of budget meetings and budget cuts, but Superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper says what you see going on at those meetings really doesn't hurt what goes on inside the classroom.

"There's a lot of stability at the schools even though it might seem like there might be a little instability in the system itself. That really hasn't filtered down to the schools," Cooper said.

What will be lacking are certain teaching materials for teachers. Due to budget issues, money for those tools hasn't been approved. Cooper says it'll be around six weeks before they can get those in the hands of teachers.

"I don't think that's going to hurt us terribly. It's going to be an inconvenience, but I think that there's plenty of stuff that our teachers are going to have ready for our kids. So, I don't want the parents to be fearful of that," Cooper said.

However, Cooper says, this year will be different. For the first time, all schools will be using the same curriculum and books. Students changing schools won't be at a different level or using different books, and that will help kickoff of the school year in the right way.

"It's all about attitude. It's all about relationships. And what I'm seeing is our schools are gelling into families. We see good things that are happening in the district already. Once we get this budget situation worked out, and we will, then I think things are going to roll very smoothly and we'll see great progress," Cooper said.

This year around 15 new administrators have been hired to replace those who have left. Cooper also says a recent influx of teacher applications means all positions should be filled for the first day of school.
