The next few years the Lafayette Parish School board wants to spend nearly 600 million dollars on school construction and repairs. It's all part of the school system's master facilities plan established in 2009, but money to fund those projects doesn't grow on trees. So the citizens oversight committee is proposing a new property tax that would help pay for the master plan. The oversight committee will present its recommendations to the school board at today's meeting. That will include pursuing a property tax in the upcoming fall elections.
