The Lafayette Parish School Board held a workshop discussing problems with staff pay and overtime -- namely that the district has not followed federal guidelines, resulting in overpaid overtime.
In one instance last year, a maintenance employee was paid for 87.5 hours when he should have been paid for 48.3.
Board policies are being updated to fix this. Human Resources Director Bruce Leiniger has only studied a few cases and is unsure how much unearned overtime has been paid out, but he estimates that between $50,000 and $80,000 annually has been spent on incorrect overtime.
The administration does not plan to request that the incorrect overtime be repaid.the board will vote on the policy changes at its next meeting.
Superintendent Pat Cooper says they would spend so much time on overtime tracking down all the issues that it would negate any gain for the district. Additionally, a collection agency would have to be engaged to recoup the money.
