Lafayette man who shot himself in New Orleans was facing trial today in Lafayette

The Lafayette man who shot himself after a standoff in the Westin Hotel was scheduled to face a felony trial today for cyberstalking.

Police say Bajkanwar Aulakh, 20, of Lafayette, first shot his 24-year-old friend in a room on the 17th floor of the Westin Hotel.

Two other friends allegedly witnessed the incident. They ran out to get help, and police say Aulakh pointed the gun at the officers when they tried to enter.

After about three hours of negotiations, the 20-year-old man apparently shot himself and the SWAT team stormed in.

He was pronounced dead about 9:55 a.m. Rescue workers rushed the 24-year-old to a hospital where he was in stable condition Sunday evening.

Aulakh was arrested on March 9 in Lafayette for domestic abuse battery after reportedly hitting his live-in girlfriend in the face twice during a verbal altercation, according to police reports.

He listed a Crowley address when he was arrested in March.

Aulakh was additionally charged in April with felony cyberstalking. Court records show that his trial was set to begin today.
