LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - A 24-year-old Lafayette man accused in the brutal beating of his live-in girlfriend has been indicted on a charge of second-degree murder.
The Advertiser reports Adam Batiste III was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury in the death of 18-year-old Gabrielle Spencer in January.
According to police records, Batiste told investigators that Spencer fell in the bathtub and hit her head. He said he tried to revive her for 30 minutes with no success.
She was taken to the hospital, where she died the next day, on Jan. 17.
Doctors told police she had severe bruising, broken bones and a head injury that likely caused her death.
Batiste remains in the Lafayette Parish jail. His bond is set at $250,000.
