One win. That's all it takes now for Lafayette Little League to make a return trip to Williamsport. Lafayette secured a spot in Thursday's Southwest Regional Semifinals with a dominating 14-6 win over New Mexico (Altamont LL). Lafayette will play felllow Pool A member East Texas, who Lafayette beat on Monday to earn the top seed.
Lafayette had its backs against the wall early on against New Mexico. Jack Pineda fired the opening blast with a solo home run in the first to give New Mexico the lead. After crossing another in the second, Lafayette finally got on the board in the 2nd thanks to a Michael Guidry RBI.
The 3rd inning was when things turned in Lafayette's favor. Nick Fruge got things started scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-all before Ethan Hines gave LLL its first lead of the game with a 2 RBI double to make it 4-2.
New Mexico fired right back with a four run 4th. But as it has been the case all summer long, Lafayette would come back swinging...literally. Joseph Battaglia sparked the Lafayette bats with a 3 run home run for the Little Leaguers to regain the lead 8-6 and the Lafayette put it in cruise control from there. Austin Primeaux's grand slam in the 5th secured things for Lafayette.
Hayden Erbe picks up the win for Lafayette throwing a crucial 1.2 innings allowing just one hit. Lafayette cycled through five pitchers on the afternoon with Hunter Bergeron getting the start.
Thursday's championship will be broadcast on ESPN2. The winner will advance to the Little League World Series.
