Lafayette cited for increased bus ridership

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - The city's bus service has been recognized by federal officials for a 3.6 percent increase in bus ridership from 2010 to 2011, the City-Parish Traffic and Transportation Department said.

The Federal Transit Administration Award of Achievement comes after Lafayette saw the largest percentage increase in bus ridership over that period for small urban areas in Louisiana, including Monroe, Alexandria, Lake Charles and Houma.

Ridership in Lafayette increased from 1,423,573 in 2010 to 1,474,650 in 2011, according to city-parish government figures. Ridership has increased by 29 percent since 2001, Transit Manager Mike Mitchell said.

He attributed the increase in part to a growing population and to expanded service areas.
