Lafayette Church Breathes Life Into "Singing Tree"

It's got all the production value of a Broadway musical, and it's in the heart of downtown Lafayette. First Baptist Church is ready to pull back the curtain on "Keep Calm...Christmas is Coming", a production that's been close to a year in the making. "We have found that people kind of like Christmas, and Christmas is the best time of the year to reach people. So we use this program that's entertaining as well as inspirational to bring people in and hope that they'll understand the true meaning of the Christmas season. And if they're not a member of a church somewhere or not active in a church that they'll get involved", says Minister of Media Dennis Clark.
And with over 12 miles of lights, 65 singers, and a 50-piece orchestra playing all original music, those with First Baptist Church say bringing "The Singing Tree" to life is kind of a big deal. "We've actually been preparing since last years performance. Last year on our playbill we actually published the prologue as to what was going to happen this year. So it's been a year in the making and it's been a great journey to go down", says Minister of Worship Arts Tim Walker.
The performance is set in 1940's England during World War II, and features music created in part by a Disney composer. With all of the hard work and expenses going in to the musical, those with the church say being able to provide a once in a lifetime experience in the Hub City is priceless. "We are trying to do this to reach people and to tell the community about the love of Jesus", says Clark. Walker says, "There's really something for everyone, from old to young, there's a part of the story that they can relate to and be a part of".
If you're interested in seeing the "Singing Christmas Tree" for yourself you've got four days to do so.
First Baptist Church will hold performances from December 13th-December 16th. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and children, and you can buy them online here.
