Lafayette charter panel seeks extension

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - The commission responsible for examining Lafayette's city and parish government has asked for more time to finalize its plans.
The Charter Commission, instructed by the City-Parish Council to examine the consolidation of the city's and parish's governmental services, voted 7-2 Monday to ask the council to extend its rapidly
approaching April deadline.
Commission Chairman George Lewis said that the
group will still try to finish its work by next Monday's meeting should the council not extend the commission's deadline.
Commission Vice Chairman Bruce Conque said all indications show whatever proposals the commission recommends will not be ready in
time for a public vote on the fall ballot.
