NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Louisiana tax preparer has pleaded guilty to preparing and filing false income tax returns for his customers.
Sixty-year-old James W. Nelson, of LaPlace, also pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge he failed to pay more than $21,000 in taxes on his own income.
Federal prosecutors say Nelson or employees under his direction filed tax returns for customers that contained false deductions and fraudulently inflated refunds.
His sentencing by U.S. District Judge Lance Africk is scheduled for May 10.
