NEW ORLEANS (AP) A New Orleans man has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for his role in a scheme to cash stolen checks.
U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan on Wednesday sentenced 40-year-old Eddie Matthews III to 37 months in prison and ordered him to pay more than $25,000 in restitution to banks he defrauded.
Federal prosecutors said Matthews altered stolen checks to increase the amounts and make them payable to others, who posed as home health care providers when they cashed them at banks.
