La getting $8.2M to house 200 homeless statewide

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - As the Louisiana Conference on Homelessness and Housing opens in Lafayette, the Louisiana Housing Corp. is getting $8.2 million in rent subsidies for 200 people now living on the street.

Corporation administrator Nicole Sweazy (SWAY-zee) says the first 100 apartments will be in complexes around the state approved last year for construction tax credits.

The money's from a program run by the federal departments of Housing and Urban Development and of Health and Human Services. Sweazy says it's the first time in Louisiana that this program has been used outside of areas hit by disasters.

HUD Regional Administrator Mark Brezina will present the check to state officials at the conference hosted by the Acadiana Regional Coalition on Homelessness and Housing.
