FRANKLIN, La. (AP) - An environmental group wants to stop a natural gas storage project in St. Mary Parish.
The Louisiana Environmental Action Network has asked the state Department of Environmental Quality to deny a permit for the Henry Gas Storage plan.
The report from LEAN says the plans to store the gas in the Cote Blanche salt dome would have a possible negative impact on waterways and wildlife. Henry Gas Storage officials have said the project will not cause any damage to the area.
LEAN is concerned the brine that will be discharged when the storage caverns are created could damage the surrounding waters.
A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for March 9 at the West St. Mary Civic Center in Jeanerette.
