BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana Attorney General James "Buddy" Caldwell's office says a Kenner doctor has pleaded guilty to charges he defrauded the state's Medicaid program.
Dr. Fiaz Afzal pleaded guilty on Thursday to 35 counts of Medicaid fraud. He was indicted in November 2010 by an East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury on charges he submitted inflated claims for patient care.
Caldwell's office said Afzal billed for tests and procedures he didn't perform and falsified documents to support those bogus claims.
The 49-year-old doctor owns Claiborne Medical Corporation.
A date for his sentencing wasn't immediately scheduled.
