NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Louisiana's blue crab industry is getting the nod from a group that certifies fisheries around the world.
The Marine Stewardship Council says it has certified Louisiana's blue crab industry as sustainable and well-managed. The council is an international non-profit organization that investigates whether a fishery should earn an eco-label. The council says it found Louisiana's blue crab industry deserved its stamp of approval after a recent assessment.
Ewell Smith, the executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, said the certification label "brings a new source of pride and confidence in Louisiana seafood."
Blue crabs are harvested by about 3,000 fishermen in Louisiana. Officials say more than 40 million pounds of crab a year are harvested in Louisiana.
