BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Louisiana's health department confirms three new cases of West Nile virus two serious infections that can damage the brain or spinal cord, and one without any symptoms.
The Department of Health and Hospitals says that brings the year's total so far to three serious infections and three without symptoms. Those cases are diagnosed when people donate blood or have blood tests for other reasons.
DHH says the new serious infections were reported in East Baton Rouge and Ascension parishes. The earlier serious infection also was in Ascension.
The new case without symptoms was in Red River Parish. Earlier cases were in East Baton Rouge and Ascension parishes.
Because the virus is established statewide, the health department urges people to take precautions against mosquito bites.
