Mardi Gras season officially kicked off Friday and Saturday was the first ball of the season.
The carnival season has officially kicked off and it was a huge party at the Cajun Dome Convention Center as the Krew of Rio kicked off their Mardi Gras celebration
Vivid colors, carnival music, and of course beads. The Krewe of Carnival en Rio transformed the Convention Center into one of the biggest parties in Lafayette Saturday night.
"I would put this ball up with anything that New Orleans has to put forward," said Susan Daigle, the Mother of the Queen of Rio.
"Usually a Mardi Gras ball, at least in my opinion is always something kind of stuffy, a lot of watching people walk up and down, but this is a big party!" said Andrew Price.
Rio is one of Lafayette's newest and fastest growing parades with more than 24 floats, and 600 riders. This year's theme, "The Spell of Rio."
"It's all about witches, good witches, bad witches, and all the wizardry and merlin.....and everything like that. We throw beads and everything is always a fun time for everybody," said Krewe member Mary-Beth Lowry.
You can catch the Krewe of Rio's parade the Saturday before Mardi Gras.
