A scam phone call created problems at a New Iberia store earlier this morning.
The Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office was called to the K-Mart on East Admiral Doyle Drive around 10 a.m. after a customer received a cell phone call saying a relative had been kidnapped. Deputies say the person making the call demanded money be wired to him to secure the release of the relative.
According to investigators, the number was traced back to a foreign country. They also say the relative in question was found safe.
Deputies say this phone call is part of a scam that has popped up recently in the Acadiana area. Officials urge you no to give any personal information during calls of this sort. If you receive a call such as this, you are urged to notify authorities.
