Kenner will save five percent on monthly health insurance premiums next year after City Council approved switching to a new carrier.
The current carrier, UnitedHealthCare, is charging $476.76 per enrolled employee for the 2014 fiscal year, which ends June 30. Chief Administrative Officer Mike Quigley says that comes out to about $4 million for 624 city employees, who do not pay any part of their premiums.
Quigley says the new carrier, Coventry Health Care, will charge $452.91 per enrolled employee next year, for a savings of approximately $200,000.
He says the savings are significant for a city with a $58.4 million operating budget.
Quigley tells NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune Coventry will provide the same level of coverage as United.
