NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Kenner Police Department is investigating
the drowning death of a suspected shoplifter.
A police report said the suspect was being chased by officers
Saturday when he jumped into the Duncan Canal. The man was trapped
between officers on either side waiting to apprehend him, and
struggled to stay afloat.
Officers threw a rope and a life jacket into the canal, but the
man allegedly refused assistance and swam away. He then disappeared
under the water.
The police report said three Kenner officers jumped in and tried
to save the man.
The suspect was pulled from the water after a search by the
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Dive Team. The man's identity is
being withheld pending notification of family.
