The city of Kaplan is losing a councilman.
Kaplan Councilman at Large Herbert Gaspard submitted his resignation today to Mayor Kirk Champagne, who said that Kaplan would be sorry to see him go.
"I was without words," said Champagne, who said that the Kaplan City Council will vote on Gaspard's replacement during the Feb. 18 meeting. Gaspard's resignation is effective Friday, Feb. 14, which coincidentally happens to be the deadline for qualification for the upcoming Apr. 5 election for Gaspard's vacated seat.
"He was a good councilman, did a great job, and we'll miss him dearly," Champagne noted. The mayor said that Gaspard's oilfied job "transferred him kind of suddenly to Houston." The news came as a shock to the mayor, he said, because he already had qualified as an incumbent candidate for reelection.
According to the mayor, only one candidate thus far has qualified for the April 5 election and that the council likely will vote on Feb. 18 to appoint this candidate, Dirk Gary, to serve as interim Councilman-at-Large until June 30.
The winner of the Apr. 5 election will begin a new term effective July 1.
