LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A Calcasieu Parish jury has found David A. Nelson guilty of manslaughter, a lesser offense than the one he was charged with.

The American Press reports Nelson, originally charged with second-degree murder, threw the punch that fatally injured 19-year-old Chad Heath on March 28, 2009, outside The Plantation nightclub near Sulphur.

Manslaughter carries a sentence of up to 40 years.

Prosecutor David Kimball said Thursday he will look into Nelson's criminal history and may file a habitual offender bill, which could increase Nelson's prison term.

State District Judge Kent Savoie will sentence Nelson on May 23.
