LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - The trial of a judge's son has been
postponed after the defendant hired a new lawyer who wants the state attorney general's office off the case.
Wilford D. Carter II has pleaded not guilty to seven misdemeanor offenses but his trial was delayed Monday after he asked the state's lawyers to recuse themselves. Retired District Judge Dennis Waldron, who was assigned by the Louisiana Supreme Court to preside, will hear the recusal motion on Nov. 29.
If the motion is granted, the Attorney General's Office will have to appoint a special prosecutor to try the cases. If the motion is denied, Waldron says the trial will begin that day.
Carter is the son of state District Judge Wilford D. Carter.
