PORT ALLEN, La. (AP) - A judge has scheduled an emergency hearing next week over a lawsuit filed by Port Allen City Council members asking for an injunction against Mayor Deedy Slaughter.
The judge ordered Slaughter to appear in court Tuesday at 9 a.m. regarding the issues laid out in the council members' petition. They had asked for a temporary restraining order, which the judge denied and instead ordered the hearing.
WBRZ-TV reports council members contend the mayor was taking unauthorized and illegal actions by continuing to issue herself direct deposits for a salary increase the council didn't approve. There are also issues involving a recent state auditor's report which found the mayor may have broken state laws.
The council plans to hold a special meeting Wednesday night to discuss the mayor's proposed budget.
