Judge grants closure of Pelican school

A federal judge has ruled that officials can close Pelican All Saints High School.
U.S. District Judge Maurice Hicks Jr. granted the request of the DeSoto Parish School Board Thursday to close the prekindergarten through 12th grade school located in southeast DeSoto Parish as part of a plan to reduce expenditures and bridge an anticipated deficit for the 2013-14 school year.
In March, the board voted to shutter the school of less than 200 students.
Hicks also addressed an issue related to the Mansfield attendance zone, ruling separately that students living in Ranchland Acres north of Grand Cane who had been attending North DeSoto schools must go to their properly zoned schools, which are in Mansfield.
