NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The city of New Orleans and Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman are asking a federal judge for more time to discuss selection of a monitor for planned reforms at the New Orleans jail.
Those reforms are outlined in a court-approved agreement between Gusman and the U.S. Justice Department - the result of a lawsuit filed on behalf of inmates. The city, which funds the jail, is a party in the suit and has been battling Gusman over how much money is needed to fund the reforms and where it should come from.
On Monday, parties in the lawsuit were to advise the court on whether they had agreed on a monitor.
However, the city and sheriff both asked for more time to further investigate candidates.
