Judge ends probation for former Berwick councilwoman

The former Berwick councilwoman who stole nearly $59,000 from the school at which she worked is no longer on probation.

THE MORGAN CITY DAILY REVIEW reports that Penny Crappell was granted a release from her five-year-probation by Judge Gerard Wattigny after only 13 months.

In 2012, Crappell pleaded no contest to stealing the money from Berwick Elementary School during her time as the school's secretary. In addition to her probation, Crappell was ordered to pay more than $77,000 in restitution.

With the end of her probation, Crappell receives a first-time offender pardon, which expunges her record and seals the court documents.
