NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A defense motion to postpone the trial of five current and former New Orleans police officers accused of covering up the shooting of civilians on a bridge after Hurricane Katrina has been denied.
U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt on Thursday left June 20 as the trial date.
Defense attorneys asked for the delay, saying they did not have enough time to properly prepare. Engelhardt pushed the trial back a week in May, but refused a request for a lengthier delay.
Police killed two people and wounded four others on the Danziger Bridge less than a week after the 2005 storm. The officers are accused of engaging in a cover-up to make the shootings appear justified.
