Jindal signs child support bill

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Gambling winnings will soon be subject to seizure from parents who haven't paid their child support.

Gov. Bobby Jindal signed the measure by Sen. Nick Gautreaux into law Thursday that allows for the taking of the gambling wins for back-owed child support. It will let the state intercept a person's winnings once they hit $1,200.

Previously, slot machine annuity payments were the only gambling proceeds that could be seized. The Gaming Control Board must develop regulations to comply with the new law by Jan. 1.

The Department of Social Services has said several states have enacted similar laws.

More than $1 billion in child support is owed to thousands of children around Louisiana.
