BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A ban on chemicals sold as bath salts and herbal incense, but snorted like cocaine or smoked like marijuana has been signed into law by Gov. Bobby Jindal.
Jindal outlawed a half-dozen chemicals sold as bath salts or plant food in a January executive order, but prosecutors had said they were hesitant to issue criminal charges without a new law. Snorting the powders can cause paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, hypertension, chest pain and suicidal thoughts, experts say.
The bill signed Wednesday at an event in Jena writes the bath salt ban into state law. It also broadens an existing prohibition on synthetic marijuana sold like incense.
Penalties for selling the products and buying them will be equivalent to other drug crimes.
