Governor Bobby Jindal is proposing three bill this legislative session pertaining to Louisiana's veterans.
The first bill would expand residential lease protection for service members and their spouses. This would allow a spouse the opportunity to break a lease if a service member were injured or killed in combat. All previous lease protection laws would also remain in effect.
The second bill would create a voluntary registry for veterans exposed to dangerous burn pits in wartime. The registry would allow veterans who sign up for it to receive information about scientific research on the effects of exposure to burn pits and possible treatments for the illnesses that exposure may bring.
The third bill, sponsored by Senator Elbert Guillory (R-Opelousas), would create veterans' drug court programs across the state. These courts would function like a regular drug court, but the programs would be specifically tailored to fit the needs of veterans. The specialized courts could also tap into federal funding for veteran rehabilitation programs.
The legislative session begins March 10.
