Jindal Honors Louisianas Longest Married Couples

BATON ROUGE - Today, Governor Bobby Jindal held a reception at the Governor's Mansion to honor Louisiana's longest married couples. Ten couples were honored, with the longest married couple being Norman and Norma Burmah of Marksville, who have been married since January 26, 1931.

Governor Jindal said, "I'm proud to honor these couples and the many years they've spent together. Their lasting commitment is truly admirable and serves as a great example for those who value the institution of marriage."

The Burmahs were married in 1931. Norman is 102 years old and Norma is 99 years old. They have two daughters, six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. They lived in New Orleans until 2005 and remain devoted Saints fans. The Burmahs are members of the Louisiana Family Forum's (LFF) Marriage Hall of Fame.

Additionally, Governor Jindal honored nine other couples who were inducted into the LFF Marriage Hall of Fame:

· Varrie and Lawrence Player of Shreveport, 78 years
· Devance and Mattie O Rains of Marthaville, 77 years
· Willie Clyde and Kathryn Flores of Vivian, 77 years
· Placide and Emily Moran of Lake Charles, 76 years
· Francis and Edna Adams of Westwego, 76 years
· Earl and Betty Harps of Denham Springs, 75 years
· Edgar and Mary Emma Bland of Shreveport, 75 years
· Clyde and Geneva Cockerham of Denham Springs, 73 years
· Edward and Hilda Guedry of Brusly, 73 years

Since 2002, LFF has identified Louisiana's longest married couple to honor the institution of marriage. LFF's first recognized Longest Married Couple was George and Germaine Briant in 2002. The Briants were followed by Fernand and Emily Cavalier as Louisiana's Longest Married Couple, and the Governor and First Lady honored the Cavaliers at the Governor's Mansion in February 2008. The Governor and First Lady continued the tradition of hosting Louisiana's Longest Married Couple at the Governor's Mansion every year, honoring Newton and Anna Leger in 2009, Bennett and Pearl Robin in 2010, and Ralph and Dorothy Richards in 2011.
