BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Debate has begun in the state House on bills making broad changes to Louisiana education law.

Thursday's debate began with consideration of a bill to make government-funded private school tuition available for low-to-moderate income families whose children now attend low-performing public schools.

That provision is part of a legislative package backed by Gov. Bobby Jindal that also includes making teacher job protection known as tenure harder to earn and maintain while easing the way for some nonprofit groups to run public schools.
