Jindal ditches tax swap proposal, so now what?

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. Bobby Jindal's leader on tax issues is indicating to lawmakers that the governor is no longer seeking a dollar-for-dollar swap in an income tax repeal.

Tim Barfield, executive counsel for the Department of Revenue, told a Senate committee on Tuesday that now that Jindal is supporting an income tax phase-out over several years, the loss of the revenue doesn't have to be entirely offset.

Jindal initially proposed to swap out the income tax for increased sales taxes charged on an array of new services. That plan was so unpopular the Republican governor announced Monday that he was ditching it.

Lawmakers and others are questioning how - and if - they'll offset the loss of $3 billion in tax revenue if they agree to repeal income taxes.
