Jindal asking for pay raise suspension

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. Bobby Jindal is asking the state Civil Service Commission to suspend annual pay raises for more than 50,000 rank-and-file government workers next year.
The commission will hear Wednesday from Jindal's top budget adviser, Commissioner of Administration Paul Rainwater, about the request for the fiscal year that begins July 1.
Jindal says the annual 4 percent pay raises - based on job evaluations - are inappropriate when the state is grappling with a $1.6 billion budget shortfall.
Any commission action governs so-called "classified
employees." The governor says he'll suspend salary hikes next year for thousands of political appointees, known as unclassified
workers, in the cabinet agencies under his control.
The commission and Jindal required similar pay freezes in the
current budget year.
