LSU calls the $34 million slashed from its public hospitals for the uninsured a consequence of Gov. Bobby Jindal's midyear budget cuts. Jindal administration leaders call the deep reductions the result of shoddy management and overspending by LSU.

The chemical detox unit and psychiatric beds in New Orleans, pediatric care across seven hospitals, newborn services for the most vulnerable babies in Lafayette, a rural health clinic in Bogalusa are all scheduled to be closed.

LSU health care chief Fred Cerise says Jindal shifted millions of dollars the hospitals needed for services to plug a hole in the Medicaid budget and protect private health care providers.

Jindal's health care secretary, Bruce Greenstein, says LSU shouldn't have counted on that money because it wasn't included in the hospitals' annual budget.
