JENNINGS, La. (AP) - The Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury has called a special election for March 27 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Coroner Richard Dupont.

The American Press reports Dupont, who had served as coroner since March 2000, died Sunday in a Lake Charles hospital after battling cancer.

Qualifying for the office will be Feb. 3-5 at the Clerk of Court's Office. Chief Deputy Coroner Dr. Charles Deese will serve as coroner until the election.

By law, the police jury had 10 days from the coroner's death to call a special election. The term will expire March 25, 2012.
