A new jail tax will take effect in Jeff Davis Parish on July 1 after voters decisively approved the measure in Saturday's election.
The tax passed with 72 percent of the vote, with 2,674 ballots for and 1,037 against.
The half-cent sales tax is expected to raise an estimated $2.1 million annually over the next 10 years for the construction, maintenance, and operation of a new Jeff Davis Parish Jail. The police jury and sheriff's office have already secured $10 million in bonds to construct the new facility.
Last week, parish officials announced plans to purchase land just north of downtown Jennings to build the new jail.
The current jail is more than 50 years old and, according to Sheriff Ivy Woods, too small to meet the needs of the parish.
