Jeanerette teacher convicted in assault, battery of student

A Jeanerette High School teacher, accused in May of abusing a student, has been convicted on both counts in Jeanerette City Court.

Larry Brown, who taught physical education, was found guilty of simple assault and simple battery. Judge Cameron Simmons sentenced Brown to 30 days in jail, but his sentence was suspended pending Brown's attendance in an anger management class and payment of a fine.

Brown was seen on surveillance footage in the school hallway approaching a 13-year-old student in a white T-shirt. In the video, the student appears to back away, but Brown pursues him.

"I'm not completely happy with it, but I do respect the judge's ruling," said Rachel Ward, the boy's mother, following Thursday's verdict.
