Jeanerette Student Speaks Out After Teacher Allegedly Criticizes Sexual Orientation

A Jeanerette Senior High School student is speaking out after a teacher allegedly made a homophobic statement about her in front of the class. Now, both the student and her mother want this teacher out of the classroom. It was a moment that left Junior Solage Alexander in shock.

"He went in the classroom and he came back, and he grabbed my arm and he kept saying he loved me, he loved me. He gave me this little comic book thing. So, I'm looking at the book and it said something about sin on the front," Alexander said.

For unknown reasons, a ROTC teacher allegedly made a statement in front of his class about this honor roll student's sexual orientation. Anderson says he gave her a book with the term, "homosexuality is an abomination" written inside.

"And I kept asking him why would you do something like that? Why would you give that to me? What was your point," Alexander said.

Anderson says she gave the book to a friend, left the classroom and told another teacher what had just happened. Solage's mother, says her daughter has faced situations like this from other students, but never from a teacher. They both don't want this incident to be swept under the rug.

"A teacher is supposed to encourage children. You're supposed to uplift children. That's not a teacher," Shondreka Alexander said.

"I hope somebody listens, does something. If not, it's going to be someone else's child and it's only going to get worse," Solage Alexander said.

We reached out to Jeanerette Senior High but the Assistant Principal declined to comment. We also reached out to Iberia Parish Superintendent Dale Henderson, he says he has not been informed about the matter but will be looking into it .
