JEANERETTE, La. --- On Saturday Sept. 29, 2012, Jeanerette Bicentennial Park and Museum will open its doors free of charge, along with over 1,400 other participating venues for the eighth annual Museum Day Live! This immensely successful program, in which Jeanerette Museum will emulate the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution's Washington, D.C.-based facilities, encourages learning and the spread of knowledge nationwide.

Inclusive by design, Museum Day Live! fulfills Smithsonian Media's mission to make cultural education accessible to everyone. For one day only, the Jeanerette Bicentennial Park and Museum will grant free access to visitors. Last year's event across the nation drew over 350,000 museum-goers, and this year's Museum Day Live! is expected to attract close to 400,000 participants.

"The Jeanerette Museum has had the honor of hosting two prestigious traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian Institute and is pleased to be a part of Museum Day Live!," said Andre "Red" Rosamond, Jeanerette Museum board president. "We hope that everyone will take the opportunity to learn more about our local culture and history as they visit the museum."

The museum will celebrate the event with various fun activities. "The museum is planning free guided tours, free music entertainment, and local author book signings," said Gail Garcia, event coordinator and Jeanerette Museum board vice-president. "The museum grounds will also host a variety of vendors and citizens selling arts and crafts, homemade items, antiques and collectibles, farm produce and more."

The Jeanerette Museum is a 100-year-old cypress home built in 1902 and dedicated as a museum in the bicentennial year of 1976. The museum has several relics from the cypress lumber and steamboat industries, and is dedicated to preserving the over-200-year history of Jeanerette and the sugar industry.

Museum Day Live! will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29. Simply arrive at the Jeanerette Museum gate for free entry or download The Museum Day Live! tickets beginning in August at Smithsonian.com/museumday. Visitors who present their Museum Day Live! ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues for one day only.
